Just making a RWD Peugeot better. All you V8 Experts, what is that in there?

Is that Rover 215 with SU's?

I know those HAVE to be SU's, and it certainly could be a Rover

The valve covers sure look like it.

Those 504 coupes and convertibles are so sexy. Once I've got a huge garage I'll have to get me one of those.
If the engine is a Rover it would make sense. This being in Europe the Rover V8 must be the most plentiful older V8. It might also be more compact than Mercedes V8s, but I wouldn't know for sure.

Two big ass SUs on nice manifolds. I suspect they are HS-8 size so 2" throats on them...and like the others that's telling me it's the Rover nee Buick 215.

Yeah, it's a Rover. Probably a 215/3.5l.

Unquestionably a Rover. See the weird little can on the left valve cover, the notch in the valve covers where the SUs fit, and the weird little neck the oil fill is on? All Rover eccentricities, along with the canted dizzy on front. In all likelihood it's a 3.5, because mounting a 3.5 manifold and SUs on a 3.9 or later would mostly be weird.

yup, it is all coming together now. Good catch. I have just never seen one without oil all over the place

The Rover is not terribly compact for its displacement, I speak as someone familiar with the dimensions. The SBC is, I think, slightly shorter, and the 302 Ford and others are more narrow. The limiting factors are a large casting to the rear, a very bulky timing setup, and oversize heads. That being said, it's probably lighter than many Mercedes V8s, and it's certainly not a huge engine.

You also don't see them all that often carbed instead of GEMS or CUX injection.

this is very true too

The early Rovers don't have *all* the weirdnesses with the valve covers, but since they then have fluted valve covers with ROVER on them, it helps ID. Just a tad. I've got a set in Merry Ole that I bought on eBay UK that BiTurbo226 is holding onto for me, because they're Just Better.
Like so.
